This project was aimed at visually telling the story of ocean plastic - describing the problem, where it comes from, and what can be done about it.
The goal was to address one of the climate solution topics outlined by Project Drawdown. My passion for the ocean and conservation of marine life led me to the topic of reducing plastics, and highlighting not just the visible consumer plastics we are all exposed to that are derived from inland sources, but also the less discussed issue of hard plastics from the fishing industry that collect in ocean gyres, far from land where most of us don't encounter them. While both creating the same issues, the different sources of consumer and fishing plastic mean different solutions are necessary, which was important to highlight, and to provide a visual distinction.
To tell the story in a way that did not leave the reader to feel overwhelmed and hopeless, it was also important to counterbalance the negative statistics with actionable solutions.
