This project employed a range of traditional and sustainable design strategies to address a sustainability challenge of our choosing.
Composting is a practice that is still uncommon throughout most of the US, for a variety of reasons such as limited infrastructure and inconvenience. I chose to design solutions for expanding adoption of residential composting, specifically on the island of Oahu, which is currently at a pivotal point in growing its composting capabilities, while being in urgent need of alternatives to landfilling and incineration. Though infrastructure remains limited, the success of composting implementation on the island will be dependent on effective communication and adoption of the practice by local residents.
Much of the research and strategy used for this project became a key component of my graduate thesis.
