A systems map is a useful tool for visualizing influencing factors within the system surrounding a particular subject. The primary goal is to map the dynamics within a system - what sectors are involved and affected, causes and effects, feedback loops, reinforcements, etc. By assessing the different stakeholders and influences at play, this can help to identify the biggest problem areas, potential targets for improvement, or potential consequences of changes within the system.
While creating a systems map around the drivers of plastic pollution, it quickly became clear that there are many influences involved beyond those that are typically associated with this issue. While this map is far from comprehensive, it can provide a helpful starting point for finding ways to address the problem.
